Are looking for a practical way to volunteer? How about joining our happy band of volunteers?

Our volunteers give support to clients, in addition to that from the statutory services based in hospital or social services departments. They will provide support for people who are experiencing problems relating to their hearing loss.

The volunteer will work at drop-in sessions alongside other volunteers and also occasionally attend home visits alone. Full training will be given and out of pocket expenses met. The regular session in Burnham runs on the 1st Monday of the month, in the afternoon, except Bank Holidays.

Key Tasks

1. Making a simple check to ascertain that the hearing aid is functioning correctly.

2. Checking that batteries and cords are functioning, replacing where necessary, instructing clients at the same time.

3. Checking that clients are familiar with the controls on their hearing aids.

4. Checking that clients know how to fit their earmould, giving further instructions where necessary.

5. Cleaning and re-tubing where necessary.

6. Ensuring that clients are aware of the best listening conditions when wearing a hearing aid.

7. Reinforcing instructions given at the time of hearing aid fitting and encouraging clients in the use of their hearing aid. The practical limitations as well as the benefits of hearing aids should be pointed out.

8. Referring any other needs of clients to the office.

9. Informing clients of the availability of environmental aids and other support services (e.g. lip-reading classes, clubs, other voluntary organisations etc.)

10. With the clients consent, involving family or carer in the understanding, use and care of the hearing aid.

11. Keeping records of all visits made.

12. Attending training / update sessions when requested.
